Vajrasattva, the dhyani-boddhisattva or spiritual son of dhyani-buddha, Akshobhya is also regarded as chief of the five dhyani-buddhas.

The Svabhavika sect in Nepal identified Swabhava or Swa [own], bhava [nature] Adi-Buddha with Vajrasattva, who, according to the Nepalese Buddhist writings, manifested himself on Mount Sumeru in the following manner. A lotus-flower of precious jewels appeared on the summit of mountain which is the center of the universe, and above it arose a moon-crescent upon which,' supremely exalted', was seated Vajrasattva.

As sixth Dhyani-Buddha, Vajrasattva presides over the Yidam the protectors and has the same relation to the Adi-Buddha that the Manushi [human] Buddha has to his ethereal counterpart or Dhyani-Buddha. The sixth sense is believed to have emanated from him, as well as the last of the six elements of which man is composed-the manas, or mind.

Vajrasattva is usually represented seated on a lotus posture. He wears a crown in which there is often an image of Akshobhya, and the dress and ornaments of Dhyani-Buddhisattva. Against his breast, he generally holds vajra in his right hand; but the vajra may be balanced on its point in the palm of his hand. With the left, he holds the ghanta on his hip. If standing, he balances the vajra in his right hand against his breast, while in the left, hanging pendent, he presses the ghanta against leg.

Unlike the other Dhyani-Boddhas, he is always crowned with or without his sakti whom he presses against his breast in the yab-yum attitude, with the right hand holding vajra, while the left holds the ghanta on his hip. He holds the kapala [skull-cup] and vajra. This form is only worshipped in secret.

About Tseden Namgyal:
Tseden Namgyal is one of Lhasa’s best known contemporary thangka painters. He has received a considerable degree of official recognition in recent years with shows in the United States as well as China and his works have appeared in numerous publications, most recently in an eight-page article in “Tibet” magazine. He has outstanding mastery of the form, which is particularly clear in the perfectly proportioned faces of his figures. One of his specialties is finely worked gilding, using a variety of techniques to produce contrasting finishes using gold foil and gold paint, as in this small painting.

The subject of this painting is Vajrasattva, who is an important god in Tantric Buddhism who stands at the head of one of the “clans” of Buddhas (that of Aksobhya). He is often portrayed at the top of thangka paintings of Buddhas and other figures from this group, where he is regarded as the originating deity who manifests the other forms.

Vajrasattva holds the bell (drilbu) and thunderbolt (dorje), the two symbols together representing the union of wisdom and compassion. He sits on a lotus throne, surrounded by peonies and precious offerings.

JAMBALA (Dzambhala or Kuber) is the God of wealth and appropriately a member of the Jewel family.
In hindu Mythology Jambala known as Kuber. His fat belly shows his prosperity and has a mongoose on his left thigh that vomits jewels as he squeezes it. In his right hand he holds a flaming wish-fulfilling jewel, which is symbolic for the riches one attains with the wealth of all.

Jambala (Dzambhala) in addition is also the Guardian deity of the north direction. Thus his image is often placed on the outer walls of monasteries and temples along with the guardians of the other three directions. This is believed to be a safeguard against harmful influences which violate the sanctity of the sanctum inside.

Swastika Symbol of Good fortune

The swastika, swastika is Sanskrit word and it's means, all is well. Swastika is a cross with four arms of equal length, with the ends of each arm bent at a right angle. Sometimes dots are added between each arm.
Swastika is an ancient symbol, and found worldwide. It is a sacred and prehistoric symbol that predates all formal religions known to humankind. In Nepal, India, and Tibet many Hindu and Buddhist gods and goddess holding Swastika. Also it can be seen in the art of the Egyptians, Romans, Greeks, Celts, Native Americans, and Persians as well Hindus, Jains and Buddhists.
The swastika's Nepalese name comes from the Sanskrit word svasti, meaning good fortune, luck and well being.

The various ways in which the Swastika is depicted, is also revered by Hindu , Buddhist and ranks second only to OM is the Swastika. Today, It remains widely used in Dharmic religion such as Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism. Though once commonly used all over the world without stigma, because of Hitler's use of the Swastika on the flag of National-socialist Germany, the symbol has become stigmatized in the Western world, the Swastika is known to the world over not as a religious symbol but as the Nazi emblem, notably even outlawed in Germany.
But the Swastika continues to hold a religious significance for the Hindus,Buddhist, Jain and Others. Like OM, the origins of Swastika are lost in the misty realms of the past and they can only be guessed by piecing together of the surviving clues.
Swastika can be seen in the art of the Egyptians, Romans, Greeks, Celts, Native Americans, and Persians as well Hindus, Jains and Buddhists.

In Hinduism, the right-hand swastika (clockwise) is a symbol of Ganesha( See right picture, click to inlarge) and Vishnu (Creator), while the left-hand (counterclockwise) swastika represents Kali and magic(disaster). The Buddhist swastika is almost always clockwise.
In Buddhism, the swastika signifies auspiciousness and good fortune as well as the Buddha's footprints and the Buddha's heart. The swastika is said to contain the whole mind of the Buddha and can often be found imprinted on the chest, feet or palms of Buddha images. It is also one of the 65 auspicious symbols on the footprint of the Buddha.

The swastika has also often been used to mark the beginning of Buddhist texts. In China and Japan, the Buddhist swastika was seen as a symbol of plurality, eternity, abundance, prosperity and long life.
The swastika is used as an auspicious mark on Buddhist temples and is especially common in Korea. It can often be seen on the decorative borders around paintings, altar cloths and banners. In Tibetan Buddhism, it is also used as a clothing decoration.

Eight Auspicious Symbols

In Mahayana Buddhism there are eight auspicious symbols (sanskrit: Astamangal) or the eight auspicious and glorious emblems. These symbols appear all together (like picture in right) or single as frequent decorative motif in stone, wood, metal and paintings. In this post I like to show you eight auspicious symbols carved in wood.
These symbols are believed to represent the gifts, given by celestial beings to the Shakyamuni Buddha on his attainment of enlightenment of Buddhahood.

Precious Umbrella
The precious umbrella symbolizes protection and royalty. The shadow protects from the heat and sun, and the coolness of the shade represents protection or preserving beings from the heat of suffering, obstacles, desire, illness and so forth in this life and all kinds of temporary and enduring sufferings of the three lower realms, and the realms of men and gods in future lives. It also represents the enjoyment of a feast of benefit under its cool shade. The parasol dome can symbolize wisdom and the hanging skirt symbolizes compassion.

Right-coiled White Conch
The white conch which coils to the right symbolizes the deep, far-reaching and melodious sound of the Dharma teachings, which being appropriate to different natures, predispositions and aspirations of disciples, awakens them from the deep slumber of ignorance and urges them to accomplish their own and others' welfare.

Victory Banner
The victory banner symbolizes the victory of the activities of one's own and others body, speech and mind over obstacles and negativitities. It was adopted as the symbol of Buddha's enlightenment. It also stands for the complete victory of the Buddhist Doctrine over all harmful and pernicious forces.

Golden Fish
The golden fish symbolizes happiness the auspiciousness of all living beings in a state of fearlessness, without danger of drowning in the ocean of sufferings, and migrating from place to place freely and spontaneously, just as fish swim freely without fear through water.

Dharma Wheel
The golden wheel symbolizes the auspiciousness of the turning of the precious wheel of Buddha's doctrine, both in its teachings and realizations, in all realms and at all times, enabling beings to experience the joy of wholesome deeds and liberation.

Endless Knot( auspicious drawing)
The Endless Knot symbolizes the mutual dependence of religious doctrine and secular affairs. Similarly, it represents the union of wisdom and method, the inseparability of emptiness and dependent arising at the time of path, and finally, at the time of enlightenment, the complete union of wisdom and great compassion.
Endless Knot is one of the most favorite symbols in Tibetan Buddhism. It is often related to the endless wisdom of Buddha and it is also significant for the interaction of opposing forces leading to their union and harmony in the universe. The symmetrical shape of the knot signifies all these things and arouses the curiosity of those who are passionate about wearing Tibetan jewelry. Giving someone Tibetan gift representing an Endless Knot, it signifies a connection between the giver and the receiver. It is also a reminder that the roots of every future positive effect are found in the present.

Lotus Flower
The lotus flower symbolizes purity, It is able to grow and blossom from the muddy water, and therefore is a symbol of divine generation. the complete purification of the defilements of the body, speech and mind, and the full blossoming of wholesome deeds in blissful liberation. Deities are often depicted holding a lotus as a symbol of their purity, compassion, renunciation and perfection of qualities.

Treasure vace
The treasure vase or (sanskrit: Kalash) symbolizes an endless rain of long life, wealth and prosperity and all the benefits of this world and liberation.

Eight Auspicious Symbols are usually displayed during the all good ceremonies. i.e.: consecration of house, fire sacrifice, wedding, etc.

PADMA SHAMBHAVA

PADMASHAMBHAVA [the lotus-born]
Padmasambhava, Lotus born Guru, is very prominent historical figure worshiped as deity in Tibetan Buddhism. In the middle of the eighth century AD, the Tibetan king Thi-Sron Detsan sent to India inviting the learned guru Padma shambhava to come to Tibet. Padma sambhava was renowned for his knowledge of dharani [mystical sentences] and of their efficacious application, and was warmly welcomed. He remained fifty years in the country, founding monasteries, and teaching the Tantra-Yogacarya doctrine. He is said to have subdued all the malignant gods in Tibet, sparing only those that became converted to Buddhism and that promised to enroll them in the Mahayana Pantheon and to see that they were properly worshiped. He claimed to have received from the dakini the books from which he acquired his miraculous power.

At the end of fifty years, Padma shambhava disappeared miraculously, and is said to have entered the body of Yaksha king, where he has reined supreme 'over all the Yakshas up till the present day, and in perpetual youth is preaching doctrine of Lamaism in a paradise which rivals that of Amitabha's western heaven of Sukhavati'.

Padmashmbhava is still worshiped by people of Lamaist pantheon as divine guru [teacher]. He is represented seated on a lotus asana [posture] with the legs locked, the right hand holding the vajra, and the left, lying his lap, the patra [bowl]. He holds his special symbol, the khatvanga [which is believed to have invented], pressed against his breast with the left arm. Padma shambhava, who used it in casting spells and exorcising devils, made the ritual object of vajra, symbol of indestructible wisdom, popular among the Lamaistic Buddhist pantheon.
His garment is flowing, and, if painted is red, as well as his peaked cap, which ends in a half vajra. The lappets over the ears are divided and turned back, thus resembling a lotus-flower, for Padma shambhava is said to have born out of a red lotus-flower. Padma shmbhava is credited for his capability of constructing the first Buddhist monastery called Samye in Tibet and establish esoteric Buddhism in the country. Buddhist tradition divides the period between the death of Buddha and the manifestation of Maitreya in the actual universe into three divisions of time:
I) Period of 500 years, 'the turning of the Wheel of the first Law'.
II) Period of 1,000 years, period of deterioration of 'the law of images' [Sadharma pratirupaka].
III) Period of 3000 years, 'the turning of the Wheel of the second Law', after which Maitreya will leave the Tushita heaven and come upon earth to 'establish the lost truths in all their purity.'

Maitreya is the only Bodhisattva, who is popular among all the Buddhism sects, i.e., the Hinayana, Mahayana, and the Vajrayana, and often his statues and paintings are found in all Buddhist shrines of northern and southern Buddhist.
Sakya-muni is supposed to have visited Maitreya in the Tushita heaven when he appointed him his successor, and many Buddhist sages [arhats] are believed to have had communion with him, transporting themselves by supernatural means to the Tushita heaven to seek enlightenment on various religious points. The great Asanga, one thousand years after the birth of Buddha Sakya-muni, ascended to the Tushita heaven, where Maitreya, initiated him, into the mystic doctrine of Tantra, which he grafted on to the Mahayana school in the beginning of the sixth century. Certain sects therefore look upon, Maitreya, as the founder of the Tantra school.

Although the cult of Maitreya was evolved before Indian King Asoka's time, his worship was not at its height until the fifth century AD, and there are many statues of him in the famous Gandhara sculptures of that period. He is represented either as Buddha or Boddhisattva. As Buddha he often with long hair drawn up in a knot on his head forming the ushnisha, his hands in dharmacakra mudra [turning the Wheel of the Law]; and as Boddhisattva he may be standing with his long hair hanging over his shoulders and his hands form 'argument' and 'charity' mudra [posture]
Tibetan Schools of Buddhism also worship Maitreya both as Buddha and Boddhisattva. As Buddha, he has short curly hairs, the ushnisha, urna, and long lobed ears. He wears monastic garment with crown and ornaments, and his hands are in dharmacakra mudra both holding lotuses stems with cakra [Wheel] in right and kalasa vase in left. He is seated with legs locked or sometime the legs, instead of locked, are pendent, and the feet may be unsupported.

We may find some minor difference in his iconographic representation among the various sects of Buddhism. The early Mongolian images of Maitreya are also generally standing, and hold in their hands forming 'argument' and 'charity' mudra, the stems of flowers called 'campa', which, however, in the bronzes often resembles the lotus flower.

In the bas-reliefs of the temple of Boro Boedoer, there are many representations of Maitreya, which date from the ninth century.
In Java Indonesia, he is also found in statuary form, as for instance in the temple of Tjandi Mendut, where he is figured seated the leg pendent and the hands in the dharmacakra mudra. see left picture

In the ancient Gandhara sculptures, Maitreya was represented much larger than his assistants were. According to the Chinese traveler Hsuan Tsang, there is a statue of Maitreya at Dardu, north of the Punjab, in wood, which is one hundred feet high. MAITREYA BUDDHA

Buddhist tradition divides the period between the death of Buddha and the manifestation of Maitreya in the actual universe into three divisions of time: I Period of 500 years, 'the turning of the Wheel of the first Law'. II Period of 1,000 years, period of deterioration of 'the law of images' [Sadharma pratirupaka]. III Period of 3000 years, 'the turning of the Wheel of the second Law', after which Maitreya will leave the Tushita heaven and come upon earth to 'establish the lost truths in all their purity.'
Maitreya is the only Bodhisattva, who is popular among all the sects Buddhism, i.e., the Hinayana, Mahayana, and the Vajrayana, and often his statues and paintings are found in all Buddhist shrines of northern and southern Buddhist.MAITREYA BUDDHA

Sakya-muni is supposed to have visited Maitreya in the Tushita heaven when he appointed him his successor, and many Buddhist sages [arhats] are believed to have had communion with him, transporting themselves by supernatural means to the Tushita heaven to seek enlightenment on various religious points. The great Asanga, one thousand years after the birth of Buddha Sakya-muni, ascended to the Tushita heaven, where Maitreya, initiated him, into the mystic doctrine of Tantra, which he grafted on to the Mahayana school in the beginning of the sixth century. Certain sects therefore look upon, Maitreya, as the founder of the Tantra school.
Although the cult of Maitreya was evolved before Indian King Asoka's time, his worship was not at its height until the fifth century AD, and there are many statues of him in the famous Gandhara sculptures of that period. He is represented either as Buddha or Boddhisattva. As Buddha he often with long hair drawn up in a knot on his head forming the ushnisha, his hands in dharmacakra mudra [turning the Wheel of the Law]; and as Boddhisattva he may be standing with his long hair hanging over his shoulders and his hands form 'argument' and 'charity' mudra [posture]
Tibetan Schools of Buddhism also worship Maitreya both as Buddha and Boddhisattva. As Buddha, he has short curly hairs, the ushnisha, urna, and long lobed ears. He wears monastic garment with crown and ornaments, and his hands are in dharmacakra mudra both holding lotuses stems with cakra [Wheel] in right and kalasa vase in left. He is seated with legs locked or sometime the legs, instead of locked, are pendent, and the feet may be unsupported.
We may find some minor difference in his iconographic representation among the various sects of Buddhism. The early Mongolian images of Maitreya are also generally standing, and hold in their hands forming 'argument' and 'charity' mudra, the stems of flowers called 'campa', which, however, in the bronzes often resembles the lotus flower.
In the bas-reliefs of the temple of Boro Boedoer, there are many representations of Maitreya, which date from the ninth century. In Java Indonesia, he is also found in statuary form, as for instance in the temple of Tjandi Mendut, where he is figured seated the leg pendent and the hands in the dharmacakra mudra.
In the ancient Gandhara sculptures, Maitreya was represented much larger than his assistants were. According to the Chinese traveler Hsuan Tsang, there is a statue of Maitreya at Dardu, north of the Punjab, in wood, which is one hundred feet high. Manjushri, personification of Transcendent Wisdom, and embodiment of the discriminative awareness [prajna] He is also the first among other Boddhisattvas mentioned in Mahayana Buddhist scriptures. In the Namasangiti [Mahayana scripture] he is called 'Adi-Buddha', or pre-moral Buddha, while in some of the text of sutras he is referred to as an historical character.
Chinese Buddhist cannon claims that Manjushri was informed by Gautama Buddha to turn the Wheel of Buddha's Law for the salvation of the Chinese and the place chosen for the manifestation was Pancasirsha [mountain of five peaks of five different colors of diamonds, sapphires, emeralds, rubies, and lapis lazuli]

When the time came for the manifestation of Manjusri, Gautama Buddha caused a golden ray to burst from his forehead. It pierced a jambu-tree, which grew from the foundation of mountain Pancasirsha. A lotus sprang from the tree, and 'from the interior of the flower was born the prince of sages, Arya Manjusri. His color was yellow; he had one face and two arms; in the right hand he brandished the sword of Wisdom; in his left, he carried a book on a lotus utpala; he was endowed with the superior and inferior marks of beauty; he was covered with many ornaments and he was resplendent

Creation of Kathmandu Valley
In the Svayambhu-purana, it is related that Manjusri left Mount Pancasirsha to visit the shrine of Svayambhu [presently in Kathmandu], which was on a mountain in the center of Lake Kalihrada. He found the lake filled with aquatic monsters and the temple inaccessible. He therefore 'opened with his sword a valley on the southern side of the lake [presently CHOVAR], the waters of the lake drained through the opening, leaving dry land at the bottom, and this was the Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal. So, he is believed as founder of civilization in Nepal and a 'Wanderer' [mendicant Buddhist priest] who propagated Buddhism into Nepal. Also Read about Manjushree Cave.
The Tibetan King in the eleventh century, the Tsong-Kha-pa, also the founder of Ge-lug-pa School of Tibetan Buddhism, which the Dalai Lama have been head of the sect, was believed as manifestation of Manjusri.
Manjusri belongs to the group of eight Dhyani-Boddhisattva, and is therefore represented like a prince with all the Boddhisattva ornaments. He sometime has a small image of Dhyani-Buddha Akshobhya in his crown. Manjusri is worshiped in different forms and name. Like he is in one form found seated on lion is known as Manjughosa. These different forms of him are practiced for different purpose of Buddhist Sadhana, has two distinctive types: one with the sword and book, which is his more usual form, and the other with the utpala or blue lotus. The sword symbolizes the cleaving asunder [dissipating] of the clouds of Ignorance; the book is the prajnaparamita, Treatise on Transcendent Wisdom.

Carlton Rochell Asian Art opened in October 2002 in the Fuller Building, a New York City landmark home to many prominent art dealers.

The gallery specializes in sculpture, paintings and decorative arts from India, Tibet, Nepal, Cambodia, Thailand and Indonesia prior to 1850. Holland Cotter of the New York Times in his review of the inaugural exhibition wrote “The arrival of a new, open-to-the public gallery devoted to Indian and Southeast Asian art is an event for the city; such showcases are few and far between…although Himalayan and Cambodian bronzes are among the most exquisite items, the gallery is dominated by several large-scale sculptures of a kind we rarely see outside museums.”

Carlton Rochell spent the first eighteen years of his career at Sotheby's, where he founded the Indian and Southeast Asian Art Department in 1988. He handled important works of art from such well-known collections as Mrs. Nelson Rockefeller, Carter Burden, Alice Heerameck, William S. Paley, Mrs. James Alsdorf, Mr. and Mrs. Klaus Perls, and Earl Morse. Later, he became the Managing Director of China and Southeast Asia and Head of the Asian Departments worldwide, as well as a highly regarded auctioneer.

Both the highest-grossing auction of Indian and Southeast Asian art ever held and the highest price ever achieved at auction for an individual work were supervised by Mr. Rochell. Souren Melekian wrote “At Sotheby’s, Carlton Rochell in New York raised his auctions of Indian art, now held during Asia week, to world eminence in the last two or three years.”(International Herald Tribune, July 26, 1997)
Finally, the first-ever auction of Contemporary Indian Paintings worldwide was overseen by Mr. Rochell in 1995, the celebrated sale of paintings from the collection of Chester and Davida Herwitz.

Mantra for Love and Compassion.

Chanting a mantra, for a longer period of time allows you to go ‘deep into the mantra’. Although the concept of mediation is interpreted in many different ways, it is generally true that mantras support meditation. Mantras can also be used to fall asleep, to wake up or to relax. Here I want to tell you about meaning of Mantra "Om Mani Padme Hum"

This mantra originates form Chenrezig, the Tibetan name of the Buddha of Compassion (Sanskrit: Avalokiteshvara see picture on the right). Chen means Eye, re means Corner of the Eye and zig means to see. Chenrizing means so to speak: He who sees the needs of all the people with compassionate eyes. Avalokiteshvara has been regarded as the most important Bodhisatwa of Tibet, the essence of speech of all Buddha’s and the manifestation of their compassion.

Meaning*

Om (Left Image Is Om ) encloses the dimensions of Body, Speech and Spirit. Often in life we experience disturbances and negative emotions which draw us away from our true nature. The OM gives us the possibility to transform this into pureness.
OM also can be translates as the essence of all enlightened form.
MANI means Jewel that stands for love and compassion (these two make everything possible and are a real jewel.)
PADME is Lotus, the flower that grows on the water and that shows everything exactly as it is; a vision in reality. The flower of wisdom and understanding (insight).
HUM represents the spirit of enlightenment. The effect is stabilization and purifying of the spirit.

ธิเบตเรียก ดอล.มา.คาร.โม. จีนเรียกแปะโต๋วบ้อพระโพธิสัตว์ดาราขาว ถือกำเนิดพร้อมกับพระอวโลติเกศวรโพธิสัตว์ ด้วยความเศร้าที่พระอมิตาภะพุทธเจ้าทรงเห็นสรรพสัตว์ลุ่มหลงอยู่แต่ในห้วงทุกข์ น้ำตาที่ไหลออกมาข้างขวาเป็นพระอวโลติเกศวรโพธิสัตว์ ข้างซ้ายเป็นดาราขาวโพธิสัตว์ เมื่อโพธิสัตว์ทั้ง 2 องค์บรรลุธรรมแล้วได้เป็นกำลังสำคัญในการโปรดสรรพสัตว์ พระองค์ทรงเป็นหนึ่งในพระโพธิสัตว์ผู้ประทานอายุวัฒนะพระแม่ดาราขาวมีดวงตาเจ็ดดวง ฝ่ามือสองดวง ฝ่าเท้าสองดวง กลางหน้าผากหนึ่งดวง ดวงตาปกติสองดวง พระแม่ดาราขาวได้ชื่อเรียกอีกชื่อว่า พระแม่เจ็ดตาอนิสงฆ์ในการปฏิบัติธรรมในองค์พระแม่ดาราขาว คือความมีอายุวัฒนะ สุขภาพที่ดี หายป่วยจากโรคภัย

The White Tara symbolizes perfect purity, and is believed to represent Transcendent Wisdom, which secures everlasting bliss to its possessor or worshipper.Tara is believed to protect human beings while they are crossing the ocean of existence.

OM represents Tara's sacred body, speech and mind.
TARE means liberating from all discontent.
TUTTARE means liberating from the eight fears, the external dangers, but mainly from the internal dangers, the delusions.
TURE means liberating from duality; it shows the true cessation of confusion.
SOHA means "may the meaning of the mantra take root in my mind."
The White Tara is represented seated, with legs locked, the soles of the feet turned upward [lotus posture]. She wears the same garments and ornaments as a Bodhisattva, and her hair is abundant and wavy. Her right hand is in 'charity' mudra, and left holding the stem of the full-blown lotus, is in 'argument' mudra. She generally has third eye of foreknowledge, and eyes on the palms of her hands and soles of her feet, symbolizes sensitivity. where as her another manifestation; the Green Tara has two full open(human) eyes
